Install, Repair, Start-Up & Winterization — Done Right

Niedan's Home Preservation designs, installs, and services sprinkler systems across Rapid City and the surrounding Black Hills communities. Whether you're laying out irrigation for a new build, dialing in coverage on an existing system that isn't reaching the corners, getting the system charged and tested for spring, or blowing the lines out before the first hard freeze — we handle the project start to finish so you don't have to chase parts suppliers or specialty contractors separately.

Rapid City's freeze-thaw cycle is brutal on irrigation. Lines that hold water through a 20-below night split at the fittings. Valves that aren't pulled and stored crack the diaphragms. Controllers with bad transformers fail mid-season right when the lawn needs the most water. We design and service with that in mind: proper sloping for drainage, blow-out ports sized for our compressors, zone layouts that match Rapid City municipal pressure, and backflow preventers that meet the water utility's annual testing requirement.

We work with both conventional rotor systems for larger lawn areas and drip irrigation for beds, foundation lines, and shrubs. If your yard is mostly turf with a few beds, we'll spec rotors for the open spaces and drip manifolds at the plantings. If your property is heavily landscaped with limited lawn, we'll walk you through a drip-first layout that saves water and runs at lower pressure. Either way, materials are billed at our cost — you see the supplier receipts, we don't add contractor markup.

For property managers, the documentation matters. Every sprinkler project comes with before-and-after photos, a zone-by-zone map, and a written summary of the work performed. Useful for tenant move-ins, owner reports, water-utility compliance records, and insurance documentation. Whether it's a single-zone repair at a rental in Box Elder or a full multi-zone install at a primary residence in Piedmont, the same standard applies.

Free on-site estimates across Rapid City, Piedmont, Box Elder, Summerset, and Black Hawk. We'll come walk the property, take flow and pressure readings, talk through options, and put together a written quote before any work starts. No pressure, no obligation.

New System Installation

Ground-up design and installation. Rotors, drip, smart controllers, backflow preventer, and winterization port — sized for your yard and water pressure.

🔧

Repair & Adjustments

Stuck valves, broken heads, leaking zones, controller upgrades, and coverage adjustments. Diagnose the actual problem and fix it — not a sales pitch to replace the whole system.

💧

Spring Startup

Slow system charge, valve inspection, head alignment, controller programming, and backflow testing. Get the system going safely without blowing out fittings or flooding the basement.

Winter Blowout

Compressed-air blow-out of every zone, controller shutdown, and above-ground component protection. Done before the first hard freeze so the lines survive the Black Hills winter.

Flat Rates, Materials at Cost, No Surprises

We quote before we install. You approve every line item before any work starts. Materials billed at our cost — always.

How often should a system be winterized?
Every fall, before the first hard freeze in Rapid City — typically the first or second week of October at elevation. We blow each zone out with compressed air until the lines run dry, shut down the controller, and protect any above-ground backflow assemblies. Skipping the blow-out is the single most common cause of cracked fittings and split lateral lines in our climate; a single missed season can wipe out a year of repairs in one cold snap.
Do you handle backflow preventer testing?
Yes. Rapid City requires annual backflow preventer testing on any irrigation system tied to the municipal water supply, and we coordinate testing and the resulting documentation with the water utility. We submit the test report on your behalf so the renewal stays current and you don't get a shut-off notice. If your existing preventer has failed or is the wrong model for current code, we'll spec a replacement and install it at the same visit.
Can you repair older systems?
Yes. We work on systems of every age and brand — Rain Bird, Hunter, Toro, Irritrol, and older manual manifolds. Common fixes include stuck solenoid valves, broken pop-up heads, leaking zone pipes, controller and transformer swaps, and wiring repairs between the controller and the field. We'll diagnose what's actually broken and either repair it on the spot or quote the parts at cost before scheduling a return visit.
What's your cancellation policy?
For scheduled sprinkler projects — particularly spring startups and winter blowouts, which we batch by neighborhood — we ask for at least 2 business days' notice to cancel or reschedule without penalty. For new installs and larger repairs, we coordinate material orders with supplier lead times, so cancellations within 5 business days of the scheduled date may be subject to restocking fees on parts already pulled. We understand weather and life happen — just call and we'll work it out.
